Did you know Halderman Farm Management representatives can help manage timber stands on your farm? Many farms in Indiana, Ohio, Michigan and Kentucky, our primary market area, have hardwood timber stands. We’ve managed farms for 88 years and have vast experience managing the timber stand just as we do the cropland and/or the farm buildings. In fact, we make it a point of emphasis to provide our managers regular updates on the timber markets and USDA programs targeting timber stand improvements.
Halderman representatives are NOT consulting foresters. We know enough about a timber stand to determine if 1) there are some trees of value in it and 2) if it would benefit from some type of timber stand improvement. If an owner agrees to further due diligence, then we call a consulting forester for a professional valuation or recommendation on improving the timber stand. They can mark trees for sale, develop the terms of the sale that protect your interests and limit damage to the remainder of the property, conduct the sealed bid auction, write the contract, collect the payment and monitor the actual harvest. They can also make recommendations on timber stand improvement programs that may capture reimbursement from USDA.
Our view is that the timber stand is much like the cropland, except that harvest occurs once every 10 to 20 years or more. Our goal is to maximize the return on your asset from all sources and managing the forestland so that regular harvests occur will likely provide returns on that portion of the property greater than the cash yield from the cropland itself. All the while you as the owner can enjoy the other benefits from a woodland such as hunting and hiking.
If you are interested in having us evaluate your timber stand and make a recommendation on the next step please contact your local Halderman representative to learn more or call us at 800-424-2324. We will connect you with the most appropriate representative.
