Did you know Halderman Farm Management representatives closely monitor your farm? Our current clients are aware that their manager visits the farm multiple times each year, talks to the farm tenant on a regular basis, via text, phone or email and monitors the quality of the farm as well. Throughout the growing season our managers make regular visits to every farm they manage to view the crop, watch for any developing concerns and work on the most recent improvement project. During the offseason they may go by less often, but we spend more time reviewing the “hard data” at that time.
Today farmers generate a tremendous amount of data on each field. This includes planting maps, fertility maps, pesticide records and yield maps. This data proves to be extremely valuable. During the winter yield results are compared to soil test results, aerial photos, and physical observations to determine how best to improve the weakest areas in a field. Sometimes drainage is the issue and a wet year causes some drowned out areas. Other years it might be a fertility or pH issue that causes the crop to under-perform. The fall and winter is a perfect time to evaluate the results from the previous year and make plans to correct, if feasible, the weaknesses.
Over time we find that incremental improvement projects increase the annual income, enhance the value of the farm and improve the farm’s local reputation. All of these factor into the farm’s value on the balance sheet and certainly will show up in sale results, if the farm is ever sold. In fact, many improvement projects are completed as the cash flow allows. This means we complete projects as cash is available from the farm operation. Other improvement projects may be more efficient if done all at once and the owner may invest funds or use debt financing to pay for the project. Halderman assists in analyzing the best option for each client.
